Devo 02: Psalm 121

My Help Comes from the Lord

A Song of Ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
    From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
    he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil;
    he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
    your going out and your coming in
    from this time forth and forevermore.

Devotional Thought:

Have you ever overslept an important class? Or even have had nightmares about sleeping through your alarm clock and missing an exam? I know even years after college I still have that nightmare from time to time! Psalm 121 tells us that we never have to worry about that with God. Our God never sleeps and is always watching over us. He keeps us from all evil and will preserve our life. He is our shade (refuge). This psalm reminds us once again where our help truly comes from, from our LORD (in all caps because this is the covenant name of God in Hebrew) the maker of heaven and earth!

Meditation Passage (Isa. 40:28-31):

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.

Prayer:

Lord, you are the keeper of my life, and the lifter of my head. Forgive me for putting my trust in other sources of help that really can’t save me. Help me to look to you for help today. And not give myself over to fear or worry knowing that You are always with me every step of the way. You are strong even when I am weak. I can’t but You can.
